Special Events

The Savannah College of Art and Design experience is enlivened by a full calendar of gallery exhibitions, lectures, festivals, workshops, performances and conferences at all locations. Special events and activities sponsored by the college enrich academic life and enhance the relationship between the college and the local community. Major events may be available via live webcast, and workshops and lectures may be audio or video recorded for students who are not located in the area.

Jan. 12-March 15
“NO LAB” Exhibition by Cao Fei and Map Office
La Galerie Pfriem, Rue Trophime, Lacoste, . France
"NO LAB" presents an urban landscape of line drawings, first-hand impressions of post-Katrina New Orleans. As a virtual flood sweeps over the city, avatars of individuals closely involved in the recovery effort appear, including Spike Lee, Barack Obama, Brad Pitt and Oprah Winfrey, who greet the visitor's avatar. The result is an environment comprised of the virtual and the real, in multiple variations, synthesized together. First shown in New Orleans, the exhibition is the first in Europe and only the second global viewing of the project. A vernissage is scheduled Jan. 17, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Both the exhibition and the vernissage are free and open to the public. For more information, contact SCAD exhibitions.

Savannah Scholarship Gala in Savannah
River Club, 3 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Savannah, Ga.
The Savannah College of Art and Design announces its annual Scholarship Gala Saturday, Jan. 24. The evening will feature a silent auction of hand-selected work by SCAD students, alumni, faculty and staff. The Scholarship Gala is the primary scholarship fundraiser for SCAD, and proceeds from the evening will go to the SCAD Scholarship Fund, benefiting future classes of SCAD students. Individual patron tickets are $150 and include cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, live music by the Swinging Medallions and a silent auction with original artwork. Individual VIP reception tickets are $250 and include the added features of a private cocktail party, silent auction preview, buy-it-now option for artwork and premium parking. Measuring Unique Studies Effectively (MUSE) Conference

MUSE is a groundbreaking assessment conference at SCAD for art and design education. Topic areas include: defining, measuring and developing creativity; institution, program and classroom assessment; and rethinking assessment as reflective critique and a practice in the scholarship of teaching and learning. Feb. 20
Career Fair
Friday, 11 a.m.-3 p.m., Savannah International Trade and Convention Center, 1 International Dr., Savannah, Ga.
More than 100 employers will be offering SCAD students and graduates internship and professional opportunities. An arts and business seminar series also will be offered during the fair. Participation is free to the SCAD community. Employers are welcome at all events. Buses and ferry transportation to the trade center will be available and details will be posted. The deadline for employer registration is Jan. 1. Company participation with job and internship descriptions will be posted on the Career Fair Web site by Jan. 15. Learn more.

INSPIRE 09: A Motion Media Design Industry Symposium

INSPIRE 09, a creative symposium hosted by the Savannah College of Art and Design, brings the luminaries of the motion media design industry together with the next generation of creative industry leaders. Now in its third year, the conference includes a look at incredible recent work, discussions of proven creative processes and tactics, and passionate arguments for the role motion media will play in the next wave of global growth and prosperity.

“Art, Design and the Cultural Moment”: Art and Design Graduate School Dean Symposium

This symposium provides graduate deans of art and design schools an in-depth look at the place of art and design education in the early 21st century. The keynote speaker will be Daniel Pink, bestselling author of "A Whole New Mind" and "Free Agent Nation" and a contributing editor for Wired magazine. Featured speakers include Stuart Ewen, David Weinberger, Ph.D., and Sean Duggan, OSB. Panels will be held on the following topics: Art, Design and Consumerism; The Museum and the Place of Art; Art and Design Education; and New Media in Art and Design. SCAD Style

The Savannah College of Art and Design's annual style and design series begins with bestowing Étoile Awards on stars of design and style, and culminates with the college's annual Fashion Show. Events at both Savannah and Atlanta locations include workshops, lectures, trunk shows, book signings and exhibitions by renowned artists and designers, all of which are free and open to the public. Fourth Annual SCAD-eLearning Spring Social

The Spring Social is a great opportunity to meet fellow online students, SCAD-eLearning staff and professors. Family and friends are welcome. A gallery hop featuring eclectic SCAD art concludes the event, and festivities continue through the weekend. This event takes place during the Sidewalk Arts Festival, a chalk-drawing competition on the sidewalks of Savannah's Forsyth Park. "Artists in Residence" Alumni Tour of Homes
SCAD-Savannah, 342 Bull St., Savannah, Ga.
SCAD alumni and faculty open their homes for a full day of tours Friday and Saturday. Meet the artists and see how SCAD graduates and faculty have incorporated their artistic and design talent into their living spaces. Tickets are $25 for one day or $45 for two days, and can be purchased in advance beginning April 13 by calling SCAD Alumni Relations at 912.525.5865, Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tickets can also be purchased the days of the tours at shopSCAD.

May 16
SCAD Fashion Show
Trustees Theater, 216 E. Broughton St., Savannah, Ga.
Shows begin at 4 p.m. and 8 p.m.
SCAD Style culminates in the annual runway show of juried student fashions, where the Andre Leon Talley Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to an icon of fashion. Tickets go on sale at the SCAD box office May 1.

Savannah Film Festival

Hosted by the Savannah College of Art and Design, the annual Savannah Film Festival presents a full range of cinematic creativity from both award-winning professionals and emerging student filmmakers. Panel discussions and presentations by visiting artists offer movie buffs the unique opportunity to experience the art of film while interacting one-on-one with their favorite filmmakers. Past honored guests have included Peter O'Toole, Kathleen Turner, Sydney Pollack, Alan Cumming, Roger Ebert, Jane Fonda, John Waters, Danny Glover, Alec Baldwin, Natasha Richardson and Ellen Burstyn.
