 Foundation studies classes consist of studio work augmented by slide lectures, demonstrations, field trips and critiques. In these courses, students learn to manipulate the principles and elements of art while developing technical skills with various tools and media. Through foundation studies, students expand their critical thinking abilities and deepen their understanding of visual language. They are prepared to evaluate and consider new concepts and materials encountered in major programs and in the professional world. To determine foundation studies requirements and electives, students should consult the curriculum list for each major.

"Darkness and Light" Exhibition by Stephen Antonakos
ACA Gallery, Woodruff Arts Center, 1280 Peachtree St., Atlanta, Ga.
Whether realized in neon or presented in drawings and models, Stephen Antonakos' architectural interventions engage individual viewers visually, spatially and mentally in the here and now. A gallery talk with Antonakos and guest curator Marshall N. Price is scheduled Jan. 22, 5 p.m., followed by a reception until 8 p.m. Both the exhibition and the reception are free and open to the public.

This workshop targets students who think visually or need a new way to organize their thoughts as they write. Students work through a mock assignment using lists, webs, clusters, Venn diagrams and other creative, graphic organizers to "map out" their course. Participants should be ready to draw and to think about writing. Scratch paper is provided. Registration is required, and seating is limited. Museum and gallery curator and arts writer, Stuart Horodner, who is currently curator at the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center, presents "A History of Curatorial Practice," based on a lifetime of work in the world of fine arts. The roundtable is offered to a limited number of students on a first come-first served basis. This workshop includes demonstrations and individual instruction to help students understand basic drawing techniques to sight and measure subjects in order to better understand proportion and scale.
